Our Story

Our nurseries are run and managed by its owners, myself (Lydia Browning) and Paul Browning. I am the area manager and Paul helps me with the day to day running of the business and is also our handy man.

We have two children, Lola-Belle and James who are both at school.

Before opening Smarty Pants I had always been a nursery nurse from the minute I left school. I have worked in various day nurseries, on the children’s ward at Russell’s Hall Hospital and at Alexandra High School where I worked with children with additional needs and gained a qualification teaching nursery nursing to the sixth formers.

Myself and many of the managers have gained our foundation degree in Early Years and I now also have the full BA hons degree in Early Years.

We have very experienced and professional managers who run every nursery and I am very hands on, visiting regularly.

Our History

smarty pants building tipton

In April 2006 Paul and I noticed Smarty Pants for sale and made an appointment to view the 4 bedroomed house and barber shop. We felt it was perfect for a nursery and applied to Sandwell council for planning permission to change the business use.

Once we were approved we arranged the mortgage and got the keys in February 2007. We then spent 6 months converting the building and opened on 03/09/2007. We quickly became very busy with more than 150 children on our waiting list, this is why we decided to open Lola-Belle’s on 03/09/2009, exactly 2 years to the day after Smarty Pants.

Lola-Belle’s is named after our daughter and is only 1 mile from Smarty Pants.

In 2017 we won the tender to set up our third nursery within Lightwoods House. In 2017 we also won a second tender within Dudley council to take over the running of the nursery within Halesowen Family Centre. Smarty Pants @ Lightwoods House and Smarty Pants @ Lye both opened on 3rd September 2017, ten years and eight years to the day after our first two.

I am so proud of the nurseries and the number of years we have now been established.

Millie's Mark

We are pleased to announce that our nurseries, Smarty Pants and Lola-Belle’s have been awarded 'Millie's Mark', a quality mark for nurseries where all of our employees are trained in paediatric first aid. This has been awarded by National Day Nurseries Association (NDNA) in association with the Department of Education and Millie's Trust, May 2017.

Since 2007 we have always had all staff trained in first aid, rather than just one on site, we felt that we can now be recognised for this and should hopefully promote awareness of the Trust and support and encourage other nurseries to do the same for the safety of the children in our care.

We are proud that we are the first in Sandwell, Dudley, Walsall, Wolverhampton and the Black Country to be awarded this quality mark. Closest nurseries with Millie's Mark are 3 in Birmingham.

More information about Millie's Trust and Millie's Mark can be found on their website. This mark will be renewed every 3 years, documents will be updated regularly and any new staff members will be trained within their first 3 months.

We hope you will all be proud that your child attends a nursery awarded with Millie's Mark and the first in the area.
